I'm Roz, the artist and creator behind Smudge Ceramics. For me, my work is an extension of who I am—it's not just about what I create, but the care and energy I put into it all. Smudge is my heart and soul; every piece reflects my expression and personal journey.
While my happy place is in the studio creating, building a business around my love for the art of making has been a ride. Each day, I learn something new about my strengths, my challenges, and what it takes to turn my passion into a sustainable practice.

My journey began in 2014, as I stumbled into a pottery class simply because a studio was on a walking route near my East Vancouver apartment. The tactile nature of clay, the magic of creating something with my hands that has the potential to withstand all of time.. I knew from that moment that ceramics was something I needed to pursue, if nothing else, for the calm it brought me. In 2020, after years of DIY learning, YouTube videos, and various communal studio rentals, I took the plunge and bought myself a kiln and wheel to set-up a makeshift studio in a spare bedroom of my house. However, I knew that to succeed, I would need to expand my skills and knowledge.

This led me to move to Nelson, BC, in 2021, and later enrol in the class of 22/23 in the Studio Ceramics Program at the Kootenay School of Arts. There, I had the opportunity to deepen my understanding of ceramics, and business, and immerse myself in a community of artists who continue to inspire me.

Skateboarding, snowboarding, and their creative culture have heavily influenced both my art, and my being. This is expressed in my work through form, bold lines/colours, with a feeling of playfulness.

Today, I share my work with you under the Smudge brand, creating pieces that blend functionality with artistic expression. Each piece is thoughtfully made, full of love, and aims to bring light into your life. Whether I'm working on custom pieces or exploring new designs, my goal is always the same: to create art that connects with people.
